From the moment that Rafael Vázquez was appointed as the new Tijuana Police Chief, a drug cartel gave him a welcome “gift”; a decomposing human head with a threat.
According to information collected by the media “However”, the skull was inside a black plastic bag on the street next to a message that points to Rafael Vázquez being a kidnapper and that he is under the command of the Sinaloa Cartel.
The note, which was addressed to Vázquez, also read: “Tijuana will bleed for this kidnapper.”
The following night, two more messages appeared in different parts of the city that reminded the Tijuana Police Chief that the state would begin to suffer from his arrival. through the shedding of blood and although this time no human heads were found, inside the bags there were remains of apparently animal meat.
Local sources assure that the messages come directly from a rival of the Sinaloa Cartel, which was led by “El Chapo” Guzmán until he was extradited to the United States and sentenced for drug trafficking crimes in that country.
So far Rafael Vázquez has chosen to remain silent, but who has spoken about the threats is the Mayor of Tijuana, Monserrat Caballero, who showed her unconditional support to the new Chief of Police.
“If there are threats, it is because of their work,” Caballero said while emphasizing that organized crime is afraid, which is why it has started to receive threats.
This is not the first time that Rafael Vázquez has been in the eye of the hurricane, in 2017 he was accused by means of a blanket of collaborating with the Sinaloa Cartel and opening the way for him to commit his misdeeds.
Two years later, in 2019, he was charged with selling police seats, as well as crimes such as torture and robbery.
Despite the signs, Rafael Vázquez has not been formally reported to the authorities, which is why Caballero was very clear in saying that he will continue to support him as long as there is no formal accusation against him in court, since it may be libel against him.
For now Rafael Vázquez has assumed his position as Chief of the Tijuana Police with the conviction of leading the state on a better path, despite everything that is said about him both in the streets and within the police.
