Australia records first Omicron death

Australia on Monday reported its first confirmed death from the mutated Omicron strain of coronavirus, amid a further increase in daily infections, but authorities held off on imposing new restrictions, saying hospital admissions rates remained low.
The death of a man in his eighties suffering from chronic diseases marked a milestone for the country, which had to halt some parts of the country’s gradual reopening due to new outbreaks after nearly two years of intermittent lockdown.
Health experts say the Omicron strain appears to be more contagious but less virulent than previous strains and has begun to spread in the country as it lifted restrictions on most local borders and allowed Australians to return from abroad without entering quarantine, which led to the number of infections rising to the highest rates during the pandemic.
Authorities did not provide any additional details about Omicron’s death except to say that the man contracted the virus in a nursing home and died in a Sydney hospital.
