Hurricane Pamela, category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall this Wednesday in the Mexican state of Sinaloa causing heavy rains, as reported by the National Water Commission (Conagua).

“This morning, the center of Hurricane Pamela made landfall in the vicinity of the municipality of San Ignacio, in Sinaloa,” the agency detailed on Twitter.

Around 7:00 local time (12:00 GMT), the cyclone is located on land 55 kilometers southeast of Elota and 65 kilometers northwest of Mazatlán, both municipalities of Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico.

The phenomenon is moving northeast at 22 kilometers per hour and presents maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour with gusts of 150 kilometers per hour.

“Its cloud bands cause heavy rains at torrential points, very strong gusts of wind and high waves on the coasts of Baja California Sur, northwest and western Mexico,” reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN) in its most recent report.

The states most affected by the cyclone are Durango, Sinaloa and Nayarit, that will register torrential rains, as well as Jalisco, Zacatecas and Sonora, with heavy rains.

“The rains caused by the cyclone could cause landslides, an increase in the levels of rivers and streams and floods in low-lying areas,” said the SMN.

For this reason, he asked the general population in the areas of the states mentioned above due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) to take extreme precautions and to attend to the recommendations issued by the Civil Protection authorities in each region.

Pamela, who trained last weekend, has had a somewhat unusual evolution, Well, this Tuesday it weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm, but strengthened again in the last hours until it made landfall.

According to the meteorological forecast, the cyclone will gradually weaken throughout the day as it travels through part of the country, leaving heavy rains.

This year in the Pacific Ocean the cyclones Andrés, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora, Olaf and Pamela have formed.

Dolores made landfall in mid-June, killing three from electrical storms.

In mid-August, the rains generated by Grace – created in the Atlantic – which made landfall in the Gulf of Mexico, caused the death of at least eleven people – eight in the state of Veracruz and three in the central state of Puebla – in addition severe flooding and damage.

The cyclone had impacted days before in the Yucatan peninsula, where it also left floods and electrical failures, although without fatalities.

Meanwhile, Nora, who made landfall on August 28, caused a minor to die in the state of Jalisco and seven disappeared, six of them fishermen from the state of Guerrero.
