Director gives update on video game adaptation

After the video game adaptation “The Division” had been quiet again in recent months, the director of the Netflix film recently commented on the current state of affairs.

It has been some time since Ubisoft confirmed its online action RPG “Tom Clancy’s The Division” wanting to film. Then it became quiet about the project before it was announced in February 2021 that the film would appear exclusively on Netflix. Now the director of the video game adaptation gave an update on the production.

The Division: start shooting next year?

The colleagues from The playlist recently had the opportunity to speak to director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who will direct the “The Division” film, on her podcast. His latest work, the action film “Red Notice,” starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, recently launched on Netflix.

When asked about the development status of the video game film adaptation, Thurber confirmed that work on the script was now almost complete and it would be his next film: “We have just finished a new version of the script and are preparing to produce it this year.”

First, however, he has to go through the script again and make some changes if necessary. But then, the filmmaker hopes, things can finally start. Depending on how extensive these revisions will be, filming could start next year.

The director then adds that his two main actors, Jake Gyllenhaal (“Prisoners”) and Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”), are “incredibly committed and passionate about the cause.” Gyllenhaal even has experience with filming of Ubisoft games. In the adaptation of the action-adventure classic “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” published in 2010, he played the main role of Prince Dastan.
