Director talks about possible sequels

With “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” a new film adaptation of Capcom’s successful survival horror series will soon start in our cinemas. The director of the screen adventure is already expressing interest in a sequel.

After a shift “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” is scheduled to open in German cinemas in three weeks. The work marks a reboot of the film series and could lead to sequels. If director Johannes Roberts (“47 Meters Down”) has his way, he already has a special “RE” game in mind as a source of inspiration, as he said to his colleagues from GamesRadar (via SFX) revealed in an exclusive interview.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City may have sequels

According to Roberts, there has been a shift in the way film adaptations of popular video game franchises are produced and perceived in recent years. “There was always the thought that gamers don’t go to the cinema and that you have to address other target groups.” He emphasizes that he has taken the proposal seriously.

Should his “Welcome to Raccoon City” run successfully in international cinemas, the director would like to continue the series. A part of Capcom’s survival horror series was particularly taken with him: “Resident Evil 4”. As Roberts adds, he is “obsessed with the fourth game” and he can imagine taking up facets of the game in the next movie: “There are a lot of interesting lore and small details that we brought into this film, but it would be fantastic to expand it. “

He explains that there are characters “that we would like to develop in the next film.” In addition, the two youngest offshoots of the video game brand, “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” and “Resident Evil Village”, would be another side of the Giving franchises “where the world is much darker and more cruel.”

Finally, Roberts explains that it would be “great” if this side of the “Resident Evil” series could also be explored in the films in the future. Furthermore, he and his team have “really created some iconic characters with Chris, Claire, Wesker and Leon.” So he hopes this is the beginning of a “whole new chapter.”

“Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” starts in German cinemas on November 24, 2021.
