Hamad Port becomes Middle East’s first 5G-enabled seaport

Doha: Ooredoo Qatar’s rollout for Phase 1 of deployment at Hamad Port becomes Middle East’s first 5G-enabled seaport Port Container Terminal 2 has been completed. Powered by Ooredoo, Hamad Port is the first 5G-enabled seaport in the Middle East. in partnership with the terminal’s operator QTerminals, the project was commenced in June 2020.

The 5G network covers more than 571,000 square metres at Container Terminal 2. In order to increase the benefits the terminal provides its customers, the two partners have devised use cases that leverage the capabilities of 5G.

With ultra-fast speed, low latency, and real-time data, Container Terminal 2 can now operate robot cranes, rubber-tyred gantries, connected assets, remotely perform inspections and maintenance, and connect with data centres online. 

The achievement was celebrated with a cake-cutting ceremony. Chief Commercial Officer at Ooredoo, Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad bin Nasser Al Thani and Group Chief Executive Officer at QTerminals, Neville Bissett attended the celebration. Now, Ooredoo 5G covers more than 90% of Qatar’s populated areas with the latest advancement. What’s more interesting is the mobile data speeds, clocking up to 1.2GBps with a 5G handset.
