Local Areas Infrastructure Programme of Ashghal wins the Green Apple Awards 2021

Doha: Ashghal has won the International Green Apple Environment Award 2021 for its Local Areas Infrastructure Programme.

Eng Saoud Al Tamimi, Manager of Roads Projects Department (RPD) at Ashghal, and Eng Noor Ashkanani, Project Engineer, received the award in a ceremony held at the Royal Horseguards Hotel in London on 15th November 2021.

“We are very proud of this achievement as it rewards RPD team efforts, who strived for notable environmental management and sustainability milestones leading to a proliferation of best practices, independent sustainability initiatives and raising of sustainability awareness across Qatar,” Eng Al Tamimi said.

RPD has implemented innovative tools to monitor and accurately record its total carbon emissions. Also, it set up key recycling yards for construction materials, allowing for improved resource efficiency and a reduction in transportation distances.

RPD’s continuous improvement is driven by resource efficiency, sustainability reporting, and increasing organizations’ competitiveness. Up to September 2021, the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme used 43% recycled materials and reduced carbon emissions totalling 121,673 tonnes (CO2e).

A total of 5,384,898 tonnes of recycled materials were included in construction works, 3,648,695 m³ of groundwater recycled into construction works, 3,346 tonnes of non-hazardous waste recycled, 711 tonnes of waste tyres recycled into crumb rubber (CRMB), 8,195,508 tonnes of construction waste diverted from landfill and 73,350 tonnes of carbon emissions reduced through efficient material transportation.

“RPD promoted a culture of sustainability and environmental best practices among all its parties and worked relentlessly on enhancing the competitiveness of organizations through staff involvement of RPD team, the contractors and supervision consultants, and through hosting rewarding initiatives such as the Best Champion Projects Initiative and Ashghal’s Annual Green Award initiative,” said Eng Ashkhanai.

In Qatar, more than 70 projects are currently under construction as part of the Local Areas Infrastructure Programme. A number of other projects are currently in the design, tender, and award stages.

Founded in 1994, the Green Organisation recognizes, rewards, and promotes the best practices of the environment around the world.
