MoPH to give specific groups a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine in Qatar

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the Ministry of Public Health for individuals with certain immunodeficiency diseases. The Ministry of Health has approved the third dose of COVID-19 for individuals with severe immunodeficiency, as well as those who are particularly susceptible to serious complications from COVID-19 infection.

Because they may not achieve the same level of immunity after two doses of the vaccine as people who do not suffer from immunodeficiency, individuals from this group are more likely to develop a serious and prolonged illness if infected with COVID-19. A third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for these patients, according to the Ministry.

There is a third dose for immunocompromised people who have already received an initial series of COVID-19 vaccines, and it is not considered a booster dose like those given to individuals whose immune response to the initial series of vaccines they have received has weakened over time, according to the Ministry. When more evidence becomes available, it will be decided whether to give a third dose of the drug to other groups.

The following groups of people are eligible for the third dose of vaccine against Covid 19:

  • Individuals with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (eg, DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome).
  • Individuals who have had an organ transplant and are using drugs that suppress the immune system.
  • Individuals with chronic conditions such as asplenia and chronic kidney disease.
  • Individuals with advanced or untreated human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Individuals who have had an organ transplant and are using drugs that suppress the immune system.
  • Individuals who have had a stem cell transplant within the past two years, or are using immunosuppressive drugs.
  • Individuals who are currently receiving cancer treatments to treat tumours or leukaemias.

People who are eligible to receive the third dose of vaccination will be contacted directly by the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) or a member of the specialised care team supervising their treatment at Hamad Medical Corporation, for the date for receiving the third dose of vaccine.
