In 2021, Latinos continue to be a minority within the main technology companies in the United States and specifically, in Silicon Valley.

According to the diversity reports of companies such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft, analyzed by the digital medium Digital Trends, although there has been an increase in employees of Latin origin from 2014 to this date, they continue to be a minority in each company.

Diversity experts point out that one of the problems these minorities face is education and the contact networks created between students and professionals. “By tradition they have facilitated the way for people of Caucasian origin and not so much for others,” the portal detailed.

How is each one?

Microsoft’s most recent report on inclusion is from October 2020, which indicates that while there have been some modest advances, the company sees “a clear opportunity to improve representation, especially of African American and Hispanic employees.”

Until the previous year, workers of Hispanic or Latino origin made up just 6.6% of the Redmond company’s workforce.

On Twitter, the numbers are very similar. Of the total of its employees in the United States, only 6.7% are Latino. Twitter also reveals that there are 6.1% Latinos in its area of technology, while the number drops to 3.9% in leadership and management.

In addition, the company expects that by 2025 a quarter of its employees in the United States will be “underrepresented minorities”; currently, this percentage is around 15% and includes the Latino, Afro-American and indigenous communities.

For its part, Facebook published a report in July 2021 in which it was indicated that “there was a growth in underrepresented communities within Facebook.”

The total of Hispanic or Latino workers reaches 6.5%, although this number varies when dividing by roles: only 4.6% work in the technology area, 11.3% do so in other departments and 5.1% in the leadership sectors.

And Google and Apple, how far have they come since 2014? In 2021, the former has 8.8% Hispanic or Latino employees, while Apple only reaches 14%.
