Deadly bacteria found in aromatherapy spray sold at Walmart

Health authorities are investigating two deaths and four confirmed cases of melioidosis, a disease that has rarely been detected in the United States.
The inquiries lead to the use of an aromatherapy spray commonly sold at Walmart but of which almost 4,000 bottles have already been recalled by the supermarket chain, according to indicated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The product is called Better Homes and Gardens Essential. Oil Infussed Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstones. Their presentations are lavender, chamomile, lemon, lime and eucalyptus and sandalwood and vanilla.
It was sold in more than 50 Walmart stores around the country, as well as online, from February to October this year, for about $ 4 dollars.
The authorities ask that whoever acquired it return it immediately to Walmart and don’t dispose of it on your own.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the bottle of this aerosol product contained the Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria, a rare and dangerous organism responsible for melioidosis.
This bacterium is generally not found in the country; Rather, it is in contaminated soil and water in tropical areas of northern Australia or Southeast Asia.
“The CDC has been investigating a cluster of four confirmed cases of melioidosis, including two deaths in the United States. Although the CDC has not confirmed the source of these four infections, the bottle with the same type of bacteria was found in the home of one of the deceased people, “said the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The four cases were identified in Georgia, Kansas, Minnesota and Texas. One of the four affected people is a minor. The disease is so rare in the United States that about a dozen cases are reported each year. Infection can be successfully treated if caught early.
