Qatar initiates projects and plans to reduce food wastes

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment issued a decision regarding food waste in Qatar. It is now mandatory for all outlets to sort out their wastes into solid and organic. An official of the MME confirmed this.

“The sorting out of wastes from source will help us to know the quantity of wastage and track the reason for wasting organic products (food items). This will enable us to know the motive behind wasting foods which are unacceptable behaviour and need to be changed,”

He said that the Ministry has adopted a strategic plan to reduce the surplus agricultural production and food waste. This initiative will also help to recycle the organic wastes into other products like fertilizers and fodders.

“The production of agricultural commodities by farmers which exceeds consumption is called surplus production. Food waste is food that is not eaten by consumers. The strategic plan has been adopted. Now we are in the stage of preparing conditions. A supreme committee for consultancies will be assigned to make the programmes to reduce food waste and surplus agricultural production,” said Dr Al Marri.

He also stressed the need to educate the youngsters about food consumption. He said that food waste is related to the behaviour of the consumers.

“Under the strategy, subjects related to the issue of reducing food waste will be added in school curricula and awareness campaigns will be launched to develop a food saving culture. The programmes will also be implemented in collaboration with restaurants to educate eateries about preparing and serving meals as per the need of the customers,” he said. Recently a restaurant in Qatar fined a customer for not fully eating the meal.

Food wastage has now been added to the National strategy for food security of the country. According to a report from the MME, measures will be taken to enhance food safety and healthy competition. From the supply chain to the customers in the outlets, the measures will ensure food wastage are minimal.

Recently two plants received licences to treat the organic waste which has the capacity to produce a total of 24,000 tonnes of organic fertilizers. This is under the projects that were launched for treating the domestic wastes in Qatar.

The MME has also coordinated with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for issuing a license to set up factories to convert some food commodities to others. For instance conversion of low-quality tomatoes to sauces.

Projects are launched to turn the food waste into concentrated feeds. Some food waste can be added to it and mixed for livestock, as well as utilising from some surplus fish for feed composition.
