The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has exemplified that Qatar has become self–sufficient in the production of dates.
This year, production of dates reached 27,000 tonnes, thereby achieving 76 percent of self–sufficiency in production.
Annually, Qatar imports about 10,000 tonnes of dates.
However, the country could export different varieties of dates too. Exporting goes through Hassad Food Company and its subsidiary Nafco.
Different varieties of Qatari dates are being showcased in the 6th annual Local Dates Festival at Souq Waqif.
The Ministry urges people to visit the festival which will continue until July 30.
Qatar has 650,000 to 700,000 palm trees spanning 2.2 hectares, MME has estimated.
“Roughly 17 percent of Qatar’s agricultural lands (approximately 13,000 hectares) house palm trees,” the Ministry tweeted.
There are 82 farms participation in the Local Dates Festival.
