Qatar signs an agreement to supply gas to Gaza Power Plant

Gaza: H E Ambassador Mohammed Al Emadi, Chairman of the Qatar Committee for Gaza Reconstruction, signed an agreement with the Gaza Electricity Generation Company and the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company, which included the creation of an escrow account to cover the costs of supplying gas and generating electricity at Gaza’s only power plant.

The Qatari committee will be the primary owner of this account and will organise and oversee payments through it, according to the agreement. When the gas power plant is operational, the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company will deposit $5 million each month into this account.

The signing ceremony took held at the Qatari committee’s headquarters in Gaza. Ambassador Al Emadi met with Walid Salman, a representative of the Gaza Electricity Generation Company, and Kanaan Obaid, the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company’s chairman of the board of directors.

The latest developments in Gaza’s electrical situation, as well as possible remedies, were reviewed by Ambassador Al Emadi, Walid Salman, and Kanaan Obaid.

The Qatari committee signed an MoU with the Energy and Natural Resources Authority and the Gaza Electricity Generation Company in late December, which contained provisions for providing and purchasing gas for the Gaza power plant.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Qatari committee will fund the construction of a $60 million gas pipeline from the supplier company to the Gaza Strip’s borders, while the Gaza Electricity Generation Company and the Energy Authority will convert the plant to work with gas and increase its production capacity to a minimum of 500 megawatts.
