Steam: New zombie shooter beaten by its 12-year-old predecessor

Back 4 Blood was released just under a month ago and the number of active players on Steam is already shrinking dramatically. Surprisingly, its spiritual predecessor can overtake the new zombie shooter and beat him with it. And that despite the fact that it is already 12 years old. What has happened there?

Back 4 Blood loses Steam players

Back 4 Blood celebrated its official release on October 12th and was able to impress on the first weekend 65,000 concurrent players on Steam (Source: SteamDB). But the zombie shooter from Turtle Rock Studios does not seem to be able to maintain this success.

Meanwhile, the numbers of PC gamers are on a daily basis Highs of 25,000 shrunk. A fading of the initial success is not uncommon. This course becomes interesting when you compare it to a very similar game.

We’re talking about Left 4 Dead 2, which is often traded as the intellectual predecessor of the new co-op shooter. With the appearance of Back 4 Blood at the beginning of the beta, this had a decline in players, but one since the official release renewed upswing experienced.

Just two weeks after the release of the new zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead 2 overtook it with current daily highs of around 35,000 simultaneous players on Steam. And that 12 years after the release.

Why is Left 4 Dead 2 pulling by?

One reason for the revival of the 12 year old classic is likely to be the recent one Halloween sale promotion lie. Valve offered the game for a cheap 1.63 euros and was thus able to attract many players. And at the perfect time, because the interest in Back 4 Blood has rubbed off on the predecessor.

From the statistics it is not clear whether bored or disappointed players switched from Back 4 Blood to Left 4 Dead 2, or whether the popularity of Back 4 Blood simply caused the predecessor to reignite.

It should also be mentioned that these numbers represent the PC and console players of the Xbox Game Pass completely left out.
