Deputy PM of Qatar emphasises the importance of women in Afghanistan’s growth

A ministerial conference was convened in New York on the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly to address the assistance for Afghan women and girls, as well as their access to education, to ensure the accomplishments of 20 years of international engagement in Afghanistan. The State of Qatar was represented at the conference by H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

As part of his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his gratitude for being invited to the virtual ministerial meeting. He reaffirmed Qatar’s entire unity with the Afghan people and support for their legitimate demands for stability, security, peace, and prosperity. In order to stop the humanitarian crisis, he said, Qatar believes that comprehensive and sustainable peace is the most important factor.

This is also true for the achievement of all sustainable development goals, including the fourth goal, which relates to quality education and access to lifelong learning opportunities for all. Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Qatar encourages Afghan authorities and the transitional administration to create a more democratic and inclusive government.

He added that the State of Qatar invited the current government to follow the lead of many Islamic countries where women fully exercise their rights. He also stressed the potential role of women in Afghanistan’s development and the importance of respecting women’s rights.  He pointed out that Qatar helped to evacuate more than 58000 people from Kabul and also provided them with temporary housing, meals, health care and vaccinations against the Covid 19.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that all the members of the ” Afghan Dreamers” were safely evacuated to Qatar. “Afghan Dreamers” is an all-girls robotics team from the Afghan city of Herat, between the ages of 15 and 19.  Additionally, he stated that QF and QFD scholarships allowed them to continue their study at QF universities. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted that this demonstrates Qatar’s strong commitment to ensuring that all children, no matter their age, have the right to education.

He stressed that Qatar’s efforts show the nation’s commitment to the people of Afghanistan and their rights. He also added that Qatar will continue supporting them with close cooperation with the United Nations, Afghan and international partners
