Al Sadd to defend the title against Muaither at 50th Amir Cup

Doha: Amir Cup pre-quarterfinal draw revealed yesterday that reigning winners Al Sadd would face Muaither. Hamad Al Hajri, a member of the Qatar Football Association’s Competitions Committee, conducted the draw virtually. The draw was explained in detail by Ali Hammoud Al Nuaimi, Head of QFA’s Competitions Department.

Al Sadd is the defending champions as well as the QNB Stars League champions. Since the tournament’s beginning in 1972, the Wolves have won the Amir Cup an unprecedented 18 times.

Al Sadd will face the winner of the pre-quarterfinal match between Al Ahli and Al Markhiya if they beat Muaither.
In the semi-finals, the Wolves will meet Al Duhail, a long-time foe.

Meanwhile, Al Duhail will begin their battle against Al Khor. The winner of that match will compete against the winner of the Al Arabi-Al Sailiya match.

Last season’s finalists Al Rayyan, on the other hand, face a difficult road to the final. In the pre-quarterfinals, the Lions will face high-flying Umm Salal, who defeated Sadd on penalties in the 2021 edition final.

Al Rayyan will face either Al Wakrah or Al Shahaniya in the quarterfinals if they win that match. Al Shamal against Qatar SC and Al Gharafa vs Al Kharaitiyat are the other pre-quarterfinal matches in Al Rayyan’s half of the draw.

There were two pools in the Round of 16 draws. The first pool had eight teams who finished first to eighth in the last season of the QNB Stars League.  The second pool includes teams who finished ninth to 12th in the QNB Stars League last season, the top three ranked clubs from the Second Division League the previous season, and the winner of the preliminary round game between Markhiya.
