Microsoft allows Android apps to be tested on Windows 11

Microsoft is now allowing Windows 11 testers to try out Android apps. Available Preview version Windows Subsystem for Android for Windows 11 beta testers, providing access to apps from the Amazon Appstore.

All testers using Intel, Qualcomm and AMD processors are able to test Android apps on Windows 11.

The apps can be downloaded through the Microsoft Store, which lists a variety of apps that then refer to the Amazon Appstore for download and installation.

Android apps can also be run alongside other Windows apps, and they are built into Alt + Tab and Task View, and you can pin them to the Start menu or taskbar.

Microsoft has partnered with Amazon to coordinate 50 apps for Windows Insider subscribers to test across Windows 11.

These applications include mobile games such as Lords Mobile, June’s Journey, and Coin Master. There are also reading apps like the Kindle and apps for kids like Lego Duplo World or Khan Academy Kids.

The apps represent a small selection of the more than 3 million apps available via the Google Play Store, and even more than 600,000 apps via the Amazon Appstore.

It is not clear how many Android apps will be available once this feature is widely launched for Windows 11.

Microsoft wants testers to try out Android apps

Microsoft built a subsystem in Windows 11 to enable support for Android apps. The subsystem includes the Linux kernel and the Android operating system based on version 11 of the AOSP project.

And the subsystem in a Hyper-V virtual machine runs like a Windows subsystem for Linux. The subsystem understands how to set the Windows graphics layer’s AOSP runtime and application APIs, memory buffers, input patterns, physical and virtual devices, and sensors.

This subsystem supports AMD, Intel and Qualcomm chipsets. The software giant has partnered with Intel to enable Arm applications to run across AMD and Intel hardware.

Microsoft is enabling Android apps in the beta channel of Windows 11. Moreover, it says it plans to offer the preview to developers channel users soon.

A computer running Windows 11 needs to be set to the US region in the beta channel. It also requires an Amazon US account to access the Amazon Appstore.
