The mayor of Chicago, Lori lightfoot, released the list of buildings and constructions that pose a risk to the lives of its inhabitants and the population in general.
The list of criminals you include consists of 98 unsafe buildings that violate the construction and safety regulations of the city, a product of an investigation from the newspaper Chicago Tribune and the organization Better Government Association.
The list includes names of owners and addresses of buildings that have been vetted by authorities and judges, due to their insecurity problems.
The compilation of these dangerous constructions began in April, when an investigation by the newspaper and the organization revealed that in the new Building Code Rejection List it would not have included 40 buildings in which 57 people lost their lives.
The authorities declared that these constructions not included in the Rejection List, continued to be a priority for the City Council. In fires alone, 61 people lost their lives inside these buildings, the deficiencies of which Chicago officials were already aware of.

To prevent the number of victims from increasing, citizens are using legal tools such as Circuit Court.
What characteristics do these failed constructions have?
The list of buildings with fatal defects in Chicago was initiated from the demands that citizens made:
- They must be the subject of an ongoing lawsuit, processed by the city and for at least a year and a half.
- They must have unresolved “immediate dangers” and no court-approved plan to fix them.
- Also included are those involved in efforts to close “drug and gang houses”, or one targeted at “problem buildings”, which may pose a danger to residents or others.
- They should not be labeled as vacant.
- Not be an owner-occupied building with four or fewer units.
Currently the authorities have included at least 100 buildings on this list.
The Tribune’s review of documents showed that there are at least 3,400 buildings with unsafe living conditions that have been in court for more than a year and a half. Of these, 780 are considered vacant and all the others have various exclusions.
Not all buildings are unsafe
There are more and they are not registered. While the reviews and insecurity issues were made known through reviews, inspections, and law enforcement, the investigation del Tribune announced that there may be buildings that are not included in the new lists.
Another finding was that not all buildings that have security violations have been the subject of an inspection by the authorities.
The most common faults
- Exposed power cables
- Lack of smoke detectors
- Lack of heating
- Broken doors
- Entrances and exits blocked
And will something be done with that list? One of the main sanctions for those owners of buildings and constructions indicated as dangerous, is the impediment of doing business with the city or other funds.
