These devices will no longer be able to access the Internet after the “blackout” of September 30

[ad_1]

It is real. Tens of thousands of devices around the world will be left without access to pages of Internet because the root certificates issued 20 years ago expired.

What many have cataloged as the “Internet blackout” will occur from September 30, 2021. This, words more, words less, it happened because the certificates installed in some devices and that authenticate the connections between them and the servers, have reached “their useful life” and no one has renewed them. Specifically, we are talking about Let’s Encrypt and HTTPSIdentTrust DST Root CA X3 certificates. Without them, it would not be possible to navigate between Internet pages as we know it now.

It is a complex issue, but we leave you the list of all the devices that will no longer be able to access Internet pages because they no longer updated their certificates.

  • Cell phones and tablets with Android Gingerbread 2.3.6 or earlier.
  • Devices with iOS 9 or earlier versions.
  • Apple computers with macOS prior to 2016 or MacOs10.12.0.
  • Playstation 3.
  • PlayStation with an operating system prior to version 5.0 (including 4).
  • Nintendo 3DS.
  • BlackBerry devices with a version lower than 10.3.3.
  • Computers with Windows XP SP3 or older.

In general, any device that is no longer supported and is considered discontinued is likely to enter the “great internet blackout“. It is very likely that you will not have a problem this time, but your current device will suffer the same blackout in a decade or two.
