“Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” turns ten today. To mark the anniversary, Naughty Dogs’ vice president said that serious bugs had occurred a few days before delivery to Sony.
Ten years ago today, Sony Interactive Entertainment launched the action adventure Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. For the tenth anniversary Naughty Dog released one items, in which several of the studio’s developers answer questions about the game.
Among other things, the Vice President Christian Gyrling told an interesting story from the development. Serious bugs emerged just a few days before delivery to Sony, which posed a major challenge for the team.
Severe bugs nearing completion
“The game was almost finished. We had sent most of the team home to play the game as we were only days away from handing the final build to Sony for manufacture. I took the game home myself and started playing it from the start. After a few hours of play, the game began to stutter. The mistakes got worse and worse until enemies became invisible, the ocean turned blood red and levels were completely missing. “
Gyrling lost his nerve and stormed President Evan Wells’ office the next morning. “We can’t deliver the game like this,” he said to him in panic.
He then made a guess as to why the serious errors occurred after a few hours of play. He discussed the issues with the lead developers and decided to put his suggestion into action. Before doing this, however, it had to be ensured that this measure actually led to the solution of the problems.
To test his proposed solution, Gyrling proceeded as follows: “I made 2 versions of the game. One was the buggy version of the game, but with debug text displayed on the screen. The second version was the “corrected” version, which also displayed bug fixes on the screen. If our guess was correct, we could tell from the numbers that appeared on the screen for both versions. “
Two QA employees tested the two versions. His assumption was confirmed. In the corrected version, the malfunction actually did not occur. Just two days later, “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” was sent to Sony to begin production.
Incidentally, the “Uncharted film” will be released in February of next year. Here Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg play the main characters Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan. The trailer showed that you can see the airplane scene from the offshoot discussed here, among other things.
