Demetrious Johnson details why he accepted special rules fight with Rodtang at ONE X

ONE Championship celebrates its tenth anniversary this December 5 with the ONE X, card that will be headed by a contest under special rules between the champion of the 125 pounds of Muay Thai, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, and who many consider to be the best flyweight in MMA history, Demetrious Johnson.

Johnson, who comes off experiencing the first KO loss of his career after being finished by the champion Adriano Moraes at ONE on TNT 1, spoke with MMA Fighting to explain what led him to accept a fight that will alternate between MMA and Muay Thai.

“We work a lot in the clinch, in the balance, in the sweeps, but we have always trained Muay Thai in our camp because it is part of MMA”, explained the former champion of the UFC on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “So with this we will focus a little more on standing combat, but we will continue to do what we have been doing.”

Johnson, winner of the ONE Flyweight Grand Prix, also revealed the reason why there will be no title involved in his fight with Rodtang.

“There are many athletes who spend their whole lives waiting for the opportunity to fight for the Muay Thai title,” said ‘Mighty Mouse’, 3 – 1 with the Asian organization. I am not a world class Muay Thai fighter. I know, and it doesn’t bother me. I did not dedicate my martial life to Muay Thai. But I agreed to fight Rodtang, and it doesn’t have to be for the belt. Let someone else have that opportunity.

ONE X will take place from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang.
