Did Microsoft fail with Bing search engine?

Search engines are one of the main reasons why the Internet is where it is now. As the search engine is the professional medium that enables the user to reach exactly what he wants among the pages on millions of websites. Google has dominated this field for more than two decades, but what about Microsoft’s Bing search engine?

No one can underestimate Microsoft’s capabilities in developing technology products and services. But to compete with a company like Google in its core field was undoubtedly difficult. Perhaps the situation will be the same if Google tries to compete with Microsoft in the field of personal computer operating systems.

That’s because Google already offers Chrome OS, but it’s a very limited operating system and a large number of non-technical users may not have heard of it.

But Microsoft wanted to compete in the field of search engines, which happened in 2005, the year Bing search engine was launched, and also the same year that Google search was more than ten years old.

In the abstract, and with some pessimism and realism, it is impossible for any company to compete with Google in the field of search engines. This is because searching on the Internet is associated in human minds with Google, to the point where the English term Google It appears.

Bing search engine from Microsoft

Due to the largeness of Google, and its extreme specialization, Bing search engine has not been able to compete directly with Google search engine. But on the other hand, the Bing search engine is practically quite enough for daily use, and to search for content of all kinds.

There are many reasons that ensured that Google outperformed Bing by a significant difference, and perhaps the most prominent is to start early. Google search engine started in 1999 while Microsoft started developing search technologies in earnest in 2005. That is, Google had developed its service for six years before Microsoft even started.

This made the Google search engine more sophisticated and efficient, and besides that, Google owns a huge amount of data that Microsoft does not have, because it is a company that works in the field of advertising.

Google is superior to Microsoft in terms of hiring and bringing talent to the company. This helped the search engine grow and improve faster. In addition, Google has invested many times what Microsoft invested in this area.

Is Bing a failed product?

Google controls 92% of the global search engine market, compared to 2.5% for a search engine Bing, and although these numbers clearly reveal Bing’s failure, this is not true.

This is because Bing still has a large number of users, and most of them are probably using it for lack of technical experience. This has contributed to the spread of the new Microsoft Edge browser, which relies mainly on Bing. Besides, Windows relies mainly on Bing, which means that all searches are directed to Bing unless the user changes it.

Bing did not achieve great success for Microsoft, but he made his mark in the field of search engines despite the weak market share. There is no doubt that intensive engine development will directly contribute to reaching a larger segment of users over time, but Microsoft is not trying desperately.

Microsoft offers an application for the Bing search engine on the Android and iOS operating systems, which attracts a good percentage of users, due to the aesthetic form and the built-in features and characteristics.

In addition to Bing and Google, we do not forget the DuckDuckGo search engine, which is flying alone in the field of search engines that maintain users’ privacy and digital security, but its market share is very modest.

Bing users search for Google

Google officially revealed in a court a short time ago through its lawyer Alfonso Lamadrid that the most searched word for Bing is “Google”.

Google may have intended to publicly belittle Bing, but the main goal was to respond to the antitrust accusations that the company suffers from. Explaining that users basically don’t want to use Bing, and that they don’t intentionally monopolize the market.

And do not forget that Google was subjected to a fine of up to 5 billion US dollars in 2018 because it was distinguishing its search application from others on the Android system.
