Nintendo confirms that Nintendo 64 games run at 60Hz

confirmed Nintendo announced that all Nintendo 64 games being re-released as part of the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription run at 60Hz in English

The news follows concerns that the re-released games, which include classics like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, are running at 50Hz in European PAL regions.

It is so named because of the PAL television standard traditionally used in some of those regions (with SECAM used in others), as opposed to the NTSC standard traditionally used in Japan and most of North America.

More recently, since most countries have stopped using PAL, in relation to video games, the term PAL region means the list of regions they have covered in the past.

The contrast goes back to the days of standard-resolution TVs that typically used the 50Hz PAL standard in Europe. But NTSC standard at 60 Hz in the United States.

This meant that footage shown on European TVs was updated 50 times per second, instead of 60 times as in the US.

This wasn’t a big deal for regular TV content (typically running at 30fps in the US and 25fps in PAL regions). But it has had a significant impact in games where it can reduce the smoothness and responsiveness of gameplay.

Nintendo brings re-released Nintendo 64 games

Concerns that re-released games would run at 50Hz in PAL regions arose after the Nintendo Direct announcement. Reports said the broadcast showed the games running significantly slower on the Nintendo UK version. The company declined to comment when asked about the discrepancy.

The problem appeared with previous versions. The Wii’s default platform included some 50Hz PAL games. This is despite the fact that the company is correcting this using a virtual platform service via Wii U.

In addition to offering the option of 60 Hz. Nintendo says that select games also include the option to play in the original PAL versions with language options.

The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is set to include nine Nintendo 64 games when it launches in late October. Plus a selection of Sega Genesis games.

More Nintendo 64 games are scheduled to arrive at a later date. Including The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and F-Zero X. Pricing for the subscription service has not been announced.
