No chance against Tesla: German e-cars are beaten

E-mobility and progress go hand in hand. New developments are correspondingly important for manufacturers, also in terms of their reputation with customers. German brands are lagging behind Tesla.

Tesla builds the most innovative electric cars in the world

German e-car manufacturers cannot compare technical innovations internationally keep up with pioneer Tesla – not even remotely. This is the result of a YouGov study, which also includes current data from the Center for Automotive Management (CAM).

Accordingly, Tesla is in the global innovation ranking far ahead with 178 points. The innovation ranking is created by the CAM with regard to three innovation fields: range, power consumption and charging capacity (source: YouGov). All-electric cars and plug-in hybrids are included. Of course, Tesla does not appear in the rating for the latter.

The Chinese brand BYD came in second in an international comparison (59 points). The best-placed German brand is Porsche in third place (53 points) followed by Audi in 4th place (49 points). Both belong to the VW Group, which will become the clear innovation market leader from Germany. Porsche currently offers some of the most powerful fast chargers.

However, the German brands can only shine with innovations for plug-in hybrids. Here BMW, Mercedes and Audi occupy the top three places. But hybrids of e-cars and combustion engines, like gasoline and diesel engines, are often considered obsolete models. For example, funding for plug-in hybrids is already shaky in Germany.

German e-cars far behind when it comes to innovations

The numbers show: The The distance to Tesla is gigantic. This is reflected in the perception of the potential customers that YouGov surveyed in Europe. Tesla lands again in terms of “perceived innovative strength”. However, the first German brand is BMW in 4th place, followed by VW in 5th place. According to consumers, Toyota and Polestar occupy places 2 and 3.

The latest innovation from VW is the ID.5 (GTX) – shown in Video. But even with that you can’t hold a candle to Tesla:

“In Germany only Tesla is very clearly associated with e-mobility, all other manufacturers follow at a large distance,” says Sven Runge, Research Solutions Partner at YouGov. Tesla is particularly convincing when it comes to innovation, experience and dominance. “Although Volkswagen is at least behind Tesla in Germany, it can still do it here no clear positioning from the consumer’s point of view with regard to e-mobility be recognized. The same applies to brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Hyundai. “
