Sam Darnold will be the Panthers’ starting quarterback in Week 17

Sam Darnold will be the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback in Week 17 against the New Orleans Saints, benching Cam Newton, coach Matt Rhule told ESPN.

Darnold, who was acquired by the Panthers in a trade with the New York Jets, lost his starting quarterback job with shoulder ailments, which sidelined him for 5 games.

The quarterback shared the role with Newton against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, adding 190 yards.

Newton, for his part, will wait for a new opportunity.
