Google Maps – show the parking situation at the destination

Google Maps can show what the parking situation looks like at the destination in selected cities. Read at GIGA in which places you can use the parking space display and how you use it.

The integration of well-known parking spaces in Google Maps is still far too little known – and it is so good and practical! For example, you can save the parking space and find it again later. In addition, the search can also be used to find parking spaces around a location in order to navigate there directly. Now there is finally a possibility in Germany that previously only worked in the USA: Google Maps shows the parking situation at the destination. Unfortunately, it works so far only in five German cities.

How does the parking situation display in Google Maps work?

Google can access a large amount of user data. Whoever has Google Maps on their mobile phone and is moving in traffic sends movement and location data to Google – if they haven’t turned it off. All of this data is used for traffic forecasts so that you can display the traffic; traffic jam warnings are also possible. It works in a similar way with the Parking space display on Google Maps.

As can be seen in the picture, the display is the Parking lot situation part of the navigation.
Only when the routing has been started, shows a Icon belowhow Google Maps assesses the parking situation at the destination. If there are not many free parking spaces at the destination, the circle around the P is red and next to it is “restricted” or “difficult“. If you don’t have to expect problems, the circle is blue.

Now it would be practical if you could combine the Google Maps display of the parking situation with the search for a parking space in order to head straight for the most promising parking space. But that doesn’t work, incomprehensibly. As soon as you start looking for a parking space at your destination and let yourself be guided to a specific parking garage, the parking situation at the destination is no longer displayed. Google probably assumes that there is always enough space in a parking garage. Anyone who has visited the parking garages in Cologne or Düsseldorf knows that this is nonsense.

If you forgot where you found the parking lot, you can read in the linked article how to find your car: Where is my car? Top apps for the forgetful.

Where can you use the park difficulty display from Google Maps?
