Facebook wants to expose intellectual property violations

Facebook is looking to help companies crack down on unauthorized use of their intellectual property across their apps, with Update New to the Trade and Advertising Intellectual Property Tool, which has also been renamed Protection of Trademark Rights, providing a more direct description of its purpose.

Facebook’s trademark protection platform allows companies to upload images of their licensed products, which Facebook’s systems can use as a reference point to detect similar matches and highlight potential usage violations in Page posts, market listings, etc.

“Trademark Rights Protection allows registered trademark owners to search and report content they believe infringes their intellectual property rights, and now provides features to simplify and automate the process,” the company said.

Companies need to register their trademark certifications and credentials with Facebook, which then gives them the ability to use the tool to discover matches based on legal ownership.

The main update to the platform is the ability to upload and save up to 10 images, such as logos or product images, for reference in scanning content across Facebook and Instagram.

The new update provides more capacity for consistent tracking and alerts, helping IP owners better detect potential violations of their licensed products.

In addition, the company is also expanding the search capacity of the tool beyond paid advertising. Brands are now also able to search and report Instagram accounts and posts that they believe may be infringing their rights.

The company has also added a new dashboard for its total intellectual property actions. Including the status of their IP reports, and historical activity.

In conjunction with Rights Manager, the company’s cross-copyright discovery tool for content creators and publishers. which provides improved coverage to detect and address potential violations before they harm content creators and rights holders through company applications.
