Kia pulls the plug: combustion engine off is a done deal

Kia has not only presented a concept for the upcoming EV9 electric car, but is also drawing attention to itself with another statement. From 2035, combustion engines should no longer roll off the assembly line. Instead, they fully rely on electric cars – with a back door.

Kia: Farewell to the combustion engine comes in 2035

With the Kia EV9, the car brand has just presented the concept of a new flagship electric car. At the same time the announcement follows that one no combustion engines from 2035 wants to sell more (source: TopGear). At the moment, however, one only speaks of the European market in this context. One would like to keep a back door open, in case combustion engines are still in demand on other continents at the time.

Kia’s announcement is anything but surprising. The parent company Hyundai had already explained in advance that there would be no new combustion engines from the summer of 2035. So Kia will not dare to go it alone. They also want by 2024 completely CO2-free be on the move.

Whether the sale of classic gasoline and diesel cars will be allowed at all from 2035 is currently the subject of discussion. So far this is only one Proposal from the EU Commission. Several EU countries are already planning an earlier end for combustion engines, for example Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands.

E-cars only: German manufacturers are planning that

Opel does not want to sell any new combustion engines in Europe as early as 2028. Audi is planning to phase out in 2033, while the parent company Volkswagen is talking about a period between 2033 and 2035. Mercedes and BMW have not yet made any specific statements. From BMW it is said that by 2030 they want to be at least half electric. Meanwhile, the proportion of e-cars in Germany is increasing considerably.
