Doha: With a webinar titled: “Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease: The Latest in Research and Best Practices”, the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) completed its World Alzheimer’s Month campaign. To create awareness about the disease among people the campaign produced many web articles and social media posts.
Experts from QBRI and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) discussed the latest discoveries and scientific findings on the disease during the webinar, which was chaired by Dr Lawrence Stanton, Scientific Director at the Neurological Disorders Research Center (NDRC), QBRI.
The Research Director at QBRI, Dr Nasser Hussein Zawia talked about the current research efforts at the institute. He also shared his knowledge on the disease, explaining when the disease begins, the causes of the disease and why it exists.
The NDRC studies new treatments and therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders, which are prevalent in Qatar and the Arab world as a whole. The research is based on experimental disease modelling, biomarker analysis, and gene therapy. Alzheimer’s disease, a kind of dementia, is a neurological illness that accounts for 60-70 per cent of all dementia cases. It is most commonly diagnosed in those over the age of 65.
