Tensor promises to put Google’s machine learning in your pocket

Google officially announced the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones, and it appeared with these phones slice New Tensor from the search giant for the first time. And the company published more information about what the new chip can do for the fastest Pixel phones.

The initial reveal of the Tensor chip was largely focused on the AI-focused TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) and how custom hardware from the company helps differentiate itself from competitors.

The company called Tensor a milestone in machine learning. It was jointly designed in conjunction with Google Research to allow it to easily translate AI and machine learning developments into actual consumer products.

For example, the company says the Tensor chip has the company’s most accurate ASR automatic speech recognition feature for both quick Google Assistant queries and longer voice tasks like live captions or a recorder app.

Tensor also enables new Pixel 6 features like motion mode, more accurate face detection, and live translations that can convert text into a different language faster than you can type.

The company also says that the Tensor chip handles customized machine learning tasks much more efficiently than previous Pixel phones.

And with the unveiling of the Pixel 6 lineup, we have more details about the rest of the chip, including the CPU, GPU, modem and key components that make up the Tensor.

The Tensor chip uses a unique set of CPU cores. And there’s the TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) dedicated to artificial intelligence. Plus two high-power Cortex-X1 cores, two medium-powered cores, and four low-power cores.

Graphics are rendered by a 20-core GPU. In addition to the Context Center that supports ambient experiences such as the always-on display, a private computing core and the new Titan M2 security chip.

There is also a dedicated image processing core to help with Pixel photography.

Google’s first smartphone chip

It’s not clear why the company chose to use Cortex-A76 cores instead of the more modern Cortex-A78. Which is more powerful and more energy efficient.

But it’s worth noting that the Snapdragon 765G in the Pixel 5 also used Cortex-A76 cores.

And the new phones should still be the fastest Pixel phones to date. The company promises 80 percent faster CPU performance compared to the Pixel 5. The GPU performance is 370 percent faster.

Google’s CPU configuration is unique. This is compared to the four traditional high-performance cores and four efficiency cores used by Qualcomm and Samsung flagships.

Google is theoretically offering twice as many Cortex-X1 performance cores – Arm’s most powerful designs – than the Snapdragon 888 or Exynos 2100. Both use one Cortex-X1 core, three Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores.

But Google has also replaced the high-performance cores with medium-performance ones. This may help increase battery life and performance, or may cause the device to fail in general.
