Nintendo Switch: Approaching 100 million units sold - software declining slightly

This week, Nintendo also presented the annual report for the second quarter of the current financial year 2021/2022 (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022), which ended on September 30, 2021.

In this, Nintendo went into the sales figures of the Switch, among other things, and pointed out that the console-handheld hybrid was sold around four million times between July 1 and September 30, 2021. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, sales fell by 34 percent, but it should be noted that the lockdowns and exit restrictions last year fueled demand for entertainment products. An incident from which Switch benefited above all in 2020 and posted corresponding sales records.

Sales of the software fell slightly

In the first half of the fiscal year (April 1 to September 30, 2021), Nintendo said it sold 8.28 million switch systems. According to the Japanese company, the standard model of the switch accounted for 6.45 million units. The sales of the Switch Lite, however, collapsed by 56.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and are given at 1.82 million. The bottom line is that the Switch had sold 92.87 million times by September 30, 2021.

For comparison: Nintendo’s most successful consoles in the form of the Wii have been sold 101.63 million times worldwide. And the PlayStation 4 should still be within reach for the Switch, as the PS4 slowly but surely ran out of steam in the past quarter with 200,000 consoles shipped. The sales of the PS4 released in November 2013 are 116.6 million consoles sold.

Software sales for Switch were also down in the first half of the 2021/2022 financial year. According to Nintendo, these fell by 6.3 percent and amount to 93.89 million games sold. The slight decrease can be explained by the fact that “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” turned out to be an unexpected success last year.

Originally, Nintendo wanted to sell 25 million units of the Switch in the entire fiscal year 2021/2022. Due to the delivery bottlenecks in the meantime, however, this forecast was reduced to 24 million systems.
