PS5: Hackers report first breakthrough

The PS5 has not yet been completely hacked. But the first hackers want to have achieved a major breakthrough. For security reasons, this could result in a new firmware update.

It appears that hackers have made strides in bypassing the PlayStation 5’s security mechanisms. Fail0verflow hacking group announced today that they were able to locate and access the PS5 root keys used to decrypt the PS5 firmware, taking them one step closer to installing unauthorized software from Sony.

“We all have (symmetrical) PS5 root keys,” Fail0verflow announced in a tweet today. “They can all be obtained from the software – including the root key for each console, if you look closely!”

The PS5’s security mechanisms are largely unknown even a year after the console was released. The console automatically logs on to the Sony servers and requires a user account to be entered. What other precautions against manipulation have been integrated has so far remained a secret.

How quickly does Sony react?

Even with the previous consoles, there was often a game of cat and mouse. Aside from being able to run pirated games, the PS5 could be opened up for further uses with the help of a hack, especially since the hardware is very potent in view of the fairly cheap price.

On the other hand, Sony should endeavor to eliminate possible vulnerabilities as quickly as possible in order to ensure that the console cannot be hacked completely, as such a hack should affect the commercial success of the console or the associated games.

The hackers did not reveal any further information about the progress. It is therefore unclear how they could gain access to the console’s sensitive data. It is also unclear whether and how quickly Sony can close the gap mentioned with a new update. However, a simple change of the root key should not be possible.
