“Rick” continues as a category 1 hurricane and moves along the southern Pacific coast of Mexico

Cyclone Rick stays like hurricane Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale as it moves along the coasts of the state of Guerrero and towards the limits with Michoacán, in the Mexican Pacific, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported this Sunday.
“The center of Hurricane Rick is located south of the coast of Guerrero, with a trajectory towards the limits of Michoacán and Guerrero,” indicated the SMN in its most recent report.
At 10:00 local time (15:00 GMT), the cyclone was located 180 kilometers south of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and 220 kilometers south-southeast of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán.
The phenomenon is moving north at 9 kilometers per hour (km / h) and registers sustained winds of 140 km / h with gusts of up to 165 km / h.
The SMN said that Rick’s cloud bands “cause very heavy rains at extraordinary points, strong winds and high waves in western, central and southern states of the national territory.”
He explained that the rains produced by the system “could generate an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, landslides and floods in areas of Michoacán and Guerrero.”
In addition, it predicted gusts of wind of 100 to 120 km / h and waves of 5 to 7 meters of significant height in the coast of Michoacán and Guerrero, and gusts of 60 to 70 km / h with waves of 1 to 3 meters in height on the coasts. from Jalisco, Colima and Oaxaca.
Because of that, The agency, in coordination with the Miami National Hurricane Center, established a hurricane prevention zone from Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero, to Punta San Telmo, Michoacán.
Along with a prevention zone for Tropical Storm effects from Tecpan de Galeana to Acapulco, Guerrero, and from Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, to Manzanillo, Colima.
He also asked the general population to take extreme precautions in the areas of the aforementioned states due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) and to attend to the recommendations issued by the Civil Protection authorities in each region.
According to the forecasts of the SMN, Rick will strengthen to a category 2 hurricane on Sunday night when it is located about 90 km south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, and will register sustained winds of 165 km / h and gusts of 205 km / h.
On Monday morning, the phenomenon is likely to make landfall in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, and already in the territory it will become a tropical storm.
Given the advance of the cyclone, the agency foresees extraordinary occasional rains (with accumulated over 250 millimeters (mm) in 24 hours) in Guerrero and Michoacán, and intense (from 75 to 150 mm) in areas of Colima, southern Jalisco and the western Oaxaca.
As well as very heavy rains (from 50 to 75 mm) in the southwest of the State of Mexico and in Morelos, and heavy rains (from 25 to 50 mm) in places of Mexico City and Puebla.
Previous Cyclones
On October 13, Cyclone Pamela made landfall as a category 1 hurricane in the state of Sinaloa, in the Mexican Pacific, where after its passage it left 2,000 families affected, in addition to 9,000 victims in the neighboring state of Nayarit and material damage, especially in the electrical network.
Mexican authorities forecast the formation of between 14 and 20 named systems in the Pacific Ocean last May. for this season, while for the Atlantic it foresaw 15 to 19 meteorological phenomena.
This year in the Pacific Ocean the cyclones Andrés, Blanca, Carlos, Dolores, Enrique, Felicia, Guillermo, Hilda, Ignacio, Jimena, Kevin, Linda, Marty, Nora, Olaf, Pamela and Rick have formed.
Dolores made landfall in mid-June, killing three from electrical storms.
In the Atlantic, where 20 named cyclones have already been registered, the most devastating has been Grace, which left a total of 11 dead in August, eight in the state of Veracruz and three in Puebla.
While Nora, who made landfall on August 28, caused the death of a minor in the state of Jalisco and seven disappeared, six of them fishermen from the state of Guerrero.
