A driver lost control during an drag racing event in Texas on an airport runway and crashed into a crowd of onlookers, killing two children and wounding eight other people on Saturday, authorities said.

A 6-year-old boy and another 8-year-old boy died in the accident occurred Saturday afternoon at an event called “Airport Race Wars 2” at the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport, Kerville police said in a statement.

The organized event was attended by thousands of people and involved drivers racing down a track while competing for cash.

The driver “lost control and left the track, colliding with parked vehicles and hitting spectators who were watching the races,” according to police.

The injured victims were taken to various hospitals, including a 46-year-old woman in critical condition.

Most do not have life-threatening injuries, although the condition of a 26-year-old man is unknown, authorities said. A 4-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl were taken to a hospital for preventive evaluations.

Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the two children who died in the event, which took place about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of San Antonio.
